Alongside the entry-level DS51 II, pro-grade DS160 II, and flagship DS230, Ikelite has launched a fourth new model—the high-end DS162. As the name suggests, the DS162 offers the same high strobe power as the DS160 II but with the continuous light capability of the DS230. As such, the DS162 boasts a maximum strobe power of 160Ws (guide number of 24) with a recycle time of less than a second from full power discharge, while the video light outputs 2,500 lumens at full power.

As with the DS230, the integrated COB LED light array produces a wide beam that can be used for video or as a modeling light and it turns off and back on again whenever the strobe is fired. The continuous light output can be controlled in low, medium and high settings and there’s an SOS mode for signaling in emergency situations.

As Ikelite explained to us, the DS230, DS162 and DS160 II share the same improved ergonomics (larger dials and new reflective detail on the knobs). They also all feature new (black-colored) hard-anodized aluminum bulkheads (as opposed to the previous nickel-plated brass ones) and are all compatible with the older NiMH battery pack for the DS161, DS160, and DS125, in addition to the new battery pack for the DS230. Electrical triggering is standard (with a fiber-optic adapter as an option), and you can add the appropriate TTL converter to enjoy automatic strobe exposure.

Change Settings without Taking your Eyes off your Subject

Your strobe is only as powerful as the batteries that drive it. Commercially available batteries do not have the low internal impedance required for truly fast recycle times. Even the best rechargeable AA batteries are sluggish in high-powered strobes and only get slower and weaker as their charge drains.
