Based on a 2013 novel by Helen Wan, the newest drama from Netflix centers on an idealistic lawyer who will do anything to become partner at her firm. The series hails from Georgia Lee and features Teen Wolf’s Arden Cho in her first leading role.

Opening Shot: After a montage of NYC scenes, a single pink stiletto heel exits the 53rd St. station in Midtown Manhattan.

The Gist: Ingrid Yun (Arden Cho) is a top lawyer at one of New York’s most prestigious law firms. But being a top lawyer isn’t enough — she wants to be Partner. Ingrid will do anything to get to the next level, even if it means skipping holidays with family, blowing off her equally impressive boyfriend Nick (Rob Heaps), or not taking her coworker’s side in an overtly racist situation at work. The only things standing in her way are her casually racist frat boy counterpart Dan (Nolan Gerard Funk) who is also gunning for the title of Partner, and a new transfer, Jeff (Dominic Sherwood), whom she has a past with.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? You may immediately compare the premise of a woman trying to break through in the man’s world of prestigious law firms to The Good Wife, and while they’re both legal dramas, the tone of each show is quite different.

Our Take: There is nothing inherently wrong with Partner Track: it’s a light, frothy legal drama that has more than its share of romantic intrigue. It checks the diversity box via its main character and her family, and the series also has moments of centering conversations about racial microaggressions (and let’s be real, macroaggressions) at work that hasn’t always been shown explicitly on screen.

But even with all of that going for it, the show is somewhat of a drag largely because of the lack of chemistry between the lead characters. Cho does her best but doesn’t have the steamy charisma with Dominic Sherwood (who plays Jeff, the British co-worker with whom she has a past) needed to sell their will-they-won’t-they scenario. Cho also plays Ingrid incredibly naively, which makes her a difficult character to root for because it often feels like she doesn’t have a backbone — even when working in cutthroat corporate America.

Despite the show centering on an Asian-American woman and her family, the show does little to fill her world with many other POCs, save for one co-worker who has to become the mouthpiece for antiracism at the entire company. Both of her love interests are somewhat boring white men, and while the world she works and plays in is certainly a boy’s club, there’s no reason there couldn’t be a few more diverse faces populating it.

In reading reviews of the book, it seems that the original text spent a lot more time on the legal aspects and foregrounding the tensions of class and race in a high-powered environment like a law firm. The show is, to its detriment, more interested in the romantic storyline which includes a very flat love triangle. In the end, Partner Track is a great show to have on in the background or mindlessly binge when you’re not looking for something extremely stimulating, but unfortunately it probably doesn’t warrant your full attention.

Sex and Skin: The series nods towards some skin in the pilot — and things do get steamy later in the series — but it’s not overly explicit.

Parting Shot: Jeff enters Ingrid’s office and subtly indicates that he knows she leaked important information to the reporter before leaning in and telling her that he also remembers exactly how they met: a steamy encounter at a friend’s wedding.

Sleeper Star: Bradley Gibson plays Ingrid’s co-worker who takes a stand against a racist event at work. At first played as the Black, gay best friend, Gibson and the writers allow him to have a meaningful arc of his own.

Most Pilot-y Line: If you’re wondering how prestigious the law firm is, Ingrid’s co-workers are dishing out insults like, “she graduated #2 at Harvard and you probably barely even graduated from Colgate.”

Our Call: SKIP IT. The series is enjoyable though extremely forgettable.
